Dr. Hong is studies the crosstalk between unfolded protein response (UPR) and cancer. The UPR is a critical protein quality control mechanism that is involved in physiological homeostasis and diseases. Particularly in cancer, previous studies show that UPR plays roles in tumorigenesis, maintaining malignancy, and therapy resistance; however, the mechanisms remain unclear. His laboratory has provided an exciting body of evidence implicating a novel mechanism that initiates the UPR pathways in cancer. Genetic manipulation of UPR genes significantly alters carcinogenesis in cancer. Dr. Hong's long term goal is to develop a new class of therapeutics for cancer based on the rational design of UPR inhibitors against the pathological ER stress.
