Hazem Ghoneim, PhD, is a member of the Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics Program at the OSUCCC – James, where he focuses his research on understanding the epigenetic programming of T-cells during infection and cancer.
Dr. Ghoneim seeks to develop a conceptual understanding of how epigenetic networks regulate T-cell function and responsiveness to immunotherapies. Despite the unprecedented success of immune checkpoint blockade therapy in treating multiple types of cancer, many patients remain nonresponsive. Dr. Ghoneim’s goal is to develop novel T cell-targeted epigenetic therapies to enhance the efficacy of T-cell immunotherapy. His work has been featured in several well-respected journals, including Cell, Journal of Immunology, Trends in Molecular Medicine and Journal of Infectious Diseases. His recent publication in Cell was featured in Faculty of 1000 Prime – a service that publishes recommendations from scientists and clinical researchers about articles in biology and medicine – for special significance. He has also co-authored publications in the journals Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Journal of Virology and Journal of Experimental Medicine. Dr. Ghoneim has received several prestigious awards, including the Scholar-in-Training Award from the American Association for Cancer Research, and he has been an invited speaker at multiple international conferences, such as the Keystone Symposium on T Cell Dysfunction, Cancer and Infection, the World Academy of Sciences-BioVision Alexandria.NXT 2018 Conference and the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies 2017 Meeting.Education
