Research Program

Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention

Dr. Shive uses the zebrafish model to analyze novel genes expressed in cancer and microenvironmental cells that promote cancer progression in the context of BRCA2 and TP53 mutations. She generated the first zebrafish model for BRCA2 mutation and identified key effects on development, gonadogenesis, and tumorigenesis. She has also identified conserved mechanisms of BRCA2-associated carcinogenesis in zebrafish, including BRCA2/TP53 collaboration, loss of heterozygosity, and effects of BRCA2 genotype and sex on tumor ploidy and survival outcome.
