Research Program

Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention

Dr. Failla and his research team are interested in the digestive stability, intestinal cell uptake, absorption, and functions of health-promoting compounds in foods. He primarily focuses on two families of compounds in plant foods, carotenoids and soy isoflavonoids. His research uses in vitro approaches to simulate digestion and study the uptake, metabolism, and transepithelial transport of bioactive compounds by human intestinal cells. He also employs cell models, animal models, and human and animal intervention trials
