Molecular Biology and Cancer Genetics
The overarching goal of Dr. Venere's laboratory is to elucidate points of fragility for glioblastoma using cell and molecular biology as well as animal models and exploit these findings to develop new treatment modalities and/or improve on current standard of care therapies and thereby alter the dismal prognosis associated with these tumors. To this end, they employ a model system based on the finding that glioblastoma tumors harbor a subset of cells, termed cancer stem cells, which drive tumor recurrence as they encompass the most malignant properties. The particular focus is on the DNA damage response, cell cycle and primary cilia.
