In particular, he uses a mouse model of adult T-cell leukemia to understand the interaction between tumor cells, microenvironment and virus. Other aspects of this research are how to use genetically improved viruses to combat leukemia and how to combine viral oncolytic therapy with other conventional or experimental therapies.

Dr. Niewiesk has co-authored many articles in well-known publications, including Institute for Laboratory Animal Research Journal, Journal of Virology, Immunology and Virus Research.
