Molecular Carcinogenesis and Chemoprevention

Pancreatic cancer is a deadly disease and obesity is a major risk factor. Nearly 30% of the world’s population is overweight or obese, and rates continue to increase in adults and children. Multiple studies indicate the dangers of obesity in promoting cancer, however, many basic questions about the mechanisms of how this occurs remain unanswered. Dr. Cruz-Monserrate's research focuses on the prevention of obesity-associated tumor development. To achieve this, her lab focuses on the molecular mechanisms of how obesity promotes cancer development. Her long term goals are to develop novel strategies for the detection and prevention of pancreatic cancer.
