The James’ 30th Anniversary

On July 9, 2020, the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute reached another milestone in its history for it was on this date three decades ago that Arthur G. James, MD, escorted the first patient into the original James and opened a new era of research-based and compassionate cancer care for the residents of central Ohio and beyond.

The hospital had only 17 inpatients on its first day, but that date marked the fulfillment of Dr. James’ longtime dream of establishing a freestanding cancer hospital at Ohio State — a dream that represented a huge step toward realizing his ultimate vision of a world without cancer.

Although much has changed at The James in the past 30 years, including the December 2014 opening of a much larger hospital that more closely integrates our mission of research, education and patient care, our shared vision of creating a cancer-free world remains unaltered.

Midway through construction of the original cancer hospital, Dr. James — a surgical oncologist who joined Ohio State’s medical staff in 1947 — wrote that, during early-morning patient rounds, he often passed a large window that offered a great view of the construction site. “On a morning when the sun is just beginning to rise,” he observed, “the hospital makes a very impressive picture. It is obvious that a new day is dawning.”

Thanks to continuing research and technological advances that translate to ever-improving cancer care we can be certain that new days still dawn at The James.

We encourage you to review the materials below for a measure of historical perspective.

The James’ 30th Anniversary Podcast Series

Listen as former and current James leaders speak about the history of the hospital.

Part 1

Dr. David Schuller

When the Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute opened on July 9, 1990, a new era had begun. “Dr. James had the honor of wheeling the first patient [from University Hospitals] into the new James,” says David E. Schuller, MD, the first CEO of the hospital. Schuller is among the giants in the history of the James and The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, where he was director from 1988-97. He shares some of the many highlights of his career in Part I of this three-part James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast. Dr. James had dreamed of establishing a dedicated cancer hospital in central Ohio for more than 40 years. "He saw the benefits of having a hospital totally focused on this disease and wasn’t going to back off of that until he achieved his goal," Schuller says.

Part 2

Dr. Michael Caligiuri

“This is an amazing, beautiful hospital that gives such phenomenal care to our patients. When you meet the staff and leaders of The James, you know you’re in the right place as a patient.” Those are the words of Michael A. Caligiuri, MD, former CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute (2008-17), and former director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center (2003-17). In Episode 63 of The James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast (the second in a three-part series on the 30th anniversary of the original James), Caligiuri discusses how he built upon the solid foundation created by David E. Schuller Clara D. Bloomfield, MD, his mentor. Caligiuri recruited scores of top physicians, scientists and physician/scientists as the OSUCCC – James grew, expanded, gained a worldwide reputation for excellence, and achieved a rare perfect score from the National Cancer Institute in 2015.

Part 3

Drs. Farrar and Pollock

In this episode of The James 30th Anniversary Celebration podcast, William B. Farrar, MD, the current CEO of The James, fills us in on the incredible vision and determination of Arthur G. James, MD. “What we’ve been able to accomplish would really make him proud to know that what he first envisioned decades ago has actually occurred, and has occurred to a larger level than he could have ever imagined," Farrar says. He describes the determination of Dr. James to bring state-of-the-art cancer treatment to central Ohio, and his amazing commitment to patients - a legacy that lives on. As a bonus, Farrar shares the story of how a burst water pipe delayed the opening of the James by about six months. This episode also features Raphael E. Pollock, MD, PhD, the current director of The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Linda Montler
"Some of my fondest memories of working at The James have been escorting people through the hospital to visit patients. It didn’t matter if the visitors were football players, esteemed coaches, queens, governors, entertainers or Brutus...the expression of thanks on each patient’s face was always the same. And I would leave work knowing that, for just a few minutes, we made each patient’s stay less scary. We are so fortunate to have The James as part of our community. And I am proud of the small part I had in building and supporting that community relationship."
