Leading by Example: Dr. Michael and Ani Caligiuri
Supporting life-saving work is not a new idea for Michael A. Caligiuri, MD. He has generously supported many projects during his tenure as director of the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center and CEO of the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, including research grants and riders in Pelotonia.
His most recent gift supports construction of a 21st century cancer hospital – the new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute – targeted to open in December 2014.
“There is no routine cancer. We now have a thumbprint for each cancer – yours, mine, anyone’s – and it’s in the DNA,” Caligiuri says. “What we’re doing in this very hospital is reading the DNA and then starting to act on that DNA to give a personalized treatment for each specific cancer.”
The new James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute is being built around that notion by putting researchers next to patients. The new hospital will also include classrooms and labs to educate the next generation of cancer researchers and physicians.
“The community needs a bigger facility to take care of cancer patients, and this is a structure that I believe will help bring an end to cancer,” Caligiuri says. “I hope this gift will inspire people to give, and that this new building will inspire patients to get well.”
Ani, Caligiuri’s wife of 28 years, knows well the passion that her husband has for his work and for the impact that the OSUCCC – James is having on cancer research and treatment. “For me, making this gift is about honoring my husband and the work he’s put in over so many years,” Ani says. “He’s been an integral part of the team that’s made so many successes in the cancer fight. I know what it means to him to do anything he can to support the work done at The James.”
