It’s time for another year of riding for research as Pelotonia participants gear up to support Ohio State’s work to create a cancer-free world. Registration is underway for the 2022 version of Pelotonia, the fundraising cycling event that has raised $236 million for cancer research at The James over its 14-year run in the Buckeye State. Among the members of Pelotonia’s dedicated community is CEO Doug Ulman, a cancer survivor who’s been instrumental in the event’s growth into an Ohio institution. During his tenure, Ulman has spread the word about his organization throughout the country, including a recent stop at the White House, where he was on-hand for an announcement from President Biden — who spoke at Pelotonia’s opening ceremony in 2017 — of a renewed commitment to the Cancer Moonshot project that was first announced during the final year of the Obama Administration. President Biden visited The James in 2021 to learn about the innovative cancer care and research underway at Ohio State. “The White House has a really aspirational goal — to reduce the number of cancer deaths by 50 percent in the next 25 years,” Ulman says. “That [could] save hundreds-of-thousands of lives and put us on the trajectory to ending this disease.” Ulman and Pelotonia President Joe Apgar discuss the 2022 ride — including fundraising tips and new routes and collaborations — on our Cancer-Free World Podcast. The mission of the Cancer Moonshot is shared by experts at The James who put Pelotonia-raised dollars to work through several projects, including the Pelotonia Fellowship and Idea Grant programs, which provide funding to aspiring and established researchers, along with statewide screening and genetic counseling initiatives. The cycling event also led to the creation of the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology, a groundbreaking program at Ohio State focused on immunotherapy and other methods of harnessing the body’s natural defenses to treat cancer. More about Pelotonia Conquering cancer will require better treatments and prevention strategies based on sound scientific research, and research requires money. Lots of it. With government funding for cancer research harder to come by, the OSUCCC – James had to find other ways to support its vision of creating a cancer-free world. Pelotonia is a three-day experience that includes a weekend of cycling, entertaining and volunteerism that was established to raise money for cancer research at the OSUCCC – James. Thanks to the generous underwriters of the event, every dollar raised by riders since Pelotonia began goes to help our 390 researchers translate scientific discoveries to innovative patient care and prevention strategies.
