As attorney and member of the Cancer Control Program at the OSUCCC – James, Micah Berman, JD, focuses on the intersection of public health and law. His research examines how public health research can assist in tobacco regulatory policy and explores how legal doctrines facilitate or limit public health interventions, particularly those relating to cancer prevention.Recently, Mr. Berman authored scholarly articles on how to provide a science base for the evaluation of tobacco products and on the legal landscape facing “Tobacco 21” laws that increase the minimum tobacco sales age. His research has appeared in the journals Tobacco Control, American Journal of Public Health and Georgetown Law Review. In addition to serving as a senior adviser to the FDA’s Center for Tobacco Products, Mr. Berman previously directed the Center for Public Health and Tobacco Policy (New York and Vermont) and the Tobacco Public Policy Center (Ohio). He has given more than 100 presentations on tobacco policy and related issues, and he frequently provides testimony on public health issues before state and local governmental bodies.
