Anal Cancer

Symptoms

Symptoms of anal cancer may be like other digestive conditions and must be evaluated by a medical professional to determine an exact cause.

When it comes to digestive conditions, it’s important to remember that any symptoms you have could be due to a variety of causes. Therefore, if you’re not feeling well, you should see your doctor. However, it’s important to be aware of anal cancer symptoms, especially if you are at risk. Experts at the OSUCCC – James offer comprehensive screening and diagnostic care too if you have any symptoms.

Common symptoms of anal cancer

Symptoms of anal cancer may be like that of other common conditions like hemorrhoids. It’s important to note that just because you have one or more of these symptoms doesn’t mean you have anal cancer.

Symptoms of anal cancer may not appear until the disease has progressed. Certain warts may turn into cancer over time. If you have any of the symptoms below or any unusual growths, ask your doctor about tests to detect anal cancer.

The following symptoms may indicate the presence of anal cancer:

  • Bleeding from the anus or rectum
  • Pain or pressure in the area around the anus
  • Itching or discharge from the anus
  • A lump near the anus
  • A change in bowel habits
  • Unexplained weight loss

If you have any of these symptoms and they last longer than two weeks or you’re at an increased risk, call your doctor. They will perform a physical exam and can make recommendations for next steps.

Hemorrhoids or anal cancer

Hemorrhoids and anal cancer may have similar symptoms, but they aren’t the same. A doctor is the only one who can determine if you have hemorrhoids or anal cancer.

Hemorrhoids are irritated and swollen veins that occur in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. They can occur on the outside of the anus or inside the lower rectum. Symptoms will be dependent on the location of the hemorrhoids. If the hemorrhoid is in the rectum, rectal bleeding may occur. If it’s on the outside of the anus, the primary symptom may be itching, pain or swelling.

However, to determine the exact cause of your symptoms, you should reach out to your doctor.
