Peritoneal Mesothelioma Symptoms

Peritoneal mesothelioma develops in the abdomen and may cause a variety of symptoms. These include pain, swelling or lumps in the abdomen, or changes in bowel patterns.

Having these symptoms does not necessarily mean you have mesothelioma. But if you have symptoms, you should tell your doctor, especially if the symptoms have continued for more than a few weeks.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma Risk Factors

A mesothelioma risk factor is anything that increases your risk of getting the disease. Not everyone with risk factors will develop mesothelioma, but having certain risk factors may increase your chance of developing a tumor.

These factors may be environmental, behavioral or genetic. For example, most people with malignant mesothelioma either worked or lived in places where they inhaled or swallowed asbestos. Living with a person who worked with or near asbestos is also a risk factor for malignant mesothelioma, because of any asbestos material that was brought near them (such as if asbestos residue clung to shoes, clothing, etc., then was tracked into a home or office).
