At the OSUCCC – James Myeloproliferative Neoplasms (MPN) Subspecialty Clinic, we offer comprehensive treatment options that address the unique needs of those diagnosed with any of the rare, chronic blood cancers known as myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN).
MPN is a collection of rare blood cancers that occur when your bone marrow (the inner, spongelike part of your bones) doesn’t work as it should and overproduces stem cells. This can cause several issues inside the body over time.
Our team of clinic specialists are experts in many areas including hematology, hematopathology, blood and marrow transplantation, cancer genetics, molecular biology and more — all of whom specialize in diagnosing and treating blood cancers. By using this team-based approach, our experts collaborate and work together to create customized treatments specifically for you.
In fact, the Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Subspecialty Clinic is one of the first comprehensive clinics of its kind in Ohio to offer a single, convenient location where you can learn more about your disease, review treatment options with hematology experts and decide together on the best treatment plan for you.
What to expect on your first visit
Our team advocates for a collaborative, comprehensive approach to your care. We want to treat not only the physical symptoms of your disease, but we also want to help you with all aspects of it. This includes care for every step of your journey — from diagnosis and treatment to ongoing condition management and support.
Upon arriving at the OSUCCC – James Myeloproliferative Neoplasms Subspecialty Clinic, a team of health care experts specializing in MPN will perform an assessment, evaluating a variety of areas, including:
- Cardiovascular and clotting risk history
- Symptom assessment
- Spleen size evaluation
- Blood count assessment
- MPN mutation profile testing (if not yet completed)
- Review any current diagnoses and treatment
- Screening for clinical trials
The team will also evaluate your current living situation (independent, caregiver or other assistance required) to understand if you may benefit from any additional support.
The goal of this visit is to tailor a targeted treatment plan that addresses your physical condition and recognizes your social and emotional needs. Because each person’s treatment and assessment are individualized, your first appointment may not look the same as another’s appointment.
That’s why it’s important for you to:
- Prepare any questions you have for your OSUCCC – James care team
- Bring a list of all medications you are taking, including:
- Name of the medication(s)
- Dosage(s)
- When the medication(s) should be taken
- For what condition(s) you are taking medication
- Write a list of any symptoms you may be experiencing and how often you are experiencing them.
You may also find it helpful to bring a family member or friend with you for your visit. This person can provide an extra set of ears as you discuss your treatment plan with your health care team.
This person-centered focus, combined with a collaborative spirit, enables our team of providers to offer you in one location:
- Convenient access to world-class treatments and interventions
- Innovative research protocols and clinical trials, some of which are only offered at the OSUCCC – James
- Specialized rehabilitative programs and physical therapy
