Lung Cancer Screening Clinic

Lung cancer screening at The James

Lung cancer is the No. 1 cancer killer of both men and women in the United States, claiming more lives than breast, ovarian, colon, kidney, melanoma, prostate and testicular cancers combined. Lung cancer screening (CT scans) has been proven to reduce lung cancer deaths by more than 20%.

As we know, there is no routine lung cancer. Each cancer is as unique and complex as the individual affected by it. Just as there is no routine lung cancer, there is no routine lung cancer screening. At the OSUCCC – James, our lung cancer screening program provides at-risk individuals with a “one-stop shop” that’s staffed by our team of lung cancer specialists whose sole focus is the prevention, detection and treatment of lung cancer. We have established lung cancer screening guidelines that are focused on the safety and health of our patients.

Personalized lung cancer screenings

Our program offers personalized lung cancer screenings, which include:
  • Annual low-dose CT scans with same-day personalized, one-on-one consultation with an OSUCCC – James pulmonologist to review real-time results
  • Option for same-day consultation with a smoking cessation expert

Program Qualifiers

  • 50-80 years old
  • Current smoker with history of smoking 1 pack per day for 20 years
  • Ex-smoker who has quit within the past 15 years

Lung cancer screening expectations

The goal of screening for lung cancer is to detect and diagnose the disease before it spreads or develops, when it is most highly curable. Frequent lung screening has been proven to be one of the most effective ways to screen high-risk patients.

It is a myth that only patients with signs and symptoms have developed cancer. Many patients are in the very early stages of lung cancer and are not aware of it. By the time a patient is experiencing serious signs and symptoms, curative treatment is often not possible. If a patient is otherwise healthy but has significant risk factors — such as those listed above — screening for lung cancer is essential.

This screening is a process using a low-dose computerized tomography (LDCT) scan to look at a patient’s lungs for the early signs of cancer. If you or a loved one are at high-risk for lung cancer, you should discuss the benefits with a thoracic oncologist (a lung cancer specialist) or a member of your existing care team. It is simple, takes only a few seconds, and does not involve any preparations or needle sticks.

Every patient is different and your doctor will make a personal recommendation as to how often you should be screened for lung cancer. The general rule is that lung cancer screenings should occur on an annual basis.
