2022 Accomplishments Report

The 2022 report features research news, clinical innovations, key facts and achievements within Ohio State's cancer program during the past calendar year.

2022 Accomplishments Report

The 2022 report features peer-reviewed studies published in scientific journals, large cancer research grants, immuno-oncology advancements, Pelotonia-funded initiatives, the OSUCCC – James Center for Cancer Engineering, new recruits and some of our far-reaching collaborations during the past calendar year.

Two notable events are highlighted: the OSUCCC – James international scientific symposium held in memory of renowned scientists Drs. Clara D. Bloomfield and Albert de la Chapelle and the retirement of respected surgical oncologist and James CEO William Farrar, MD, after 46 years at Ohio State.

OSUCCC – James researchers in 2022 gained 23 NCI grants that boosted the cancer program’s NCI funding to $64.2 million. They also opened 152 clinical trials, bringing the total number of available cancer clinical trials at Ohio State to nearly 700, and they published 825 articles about their work in peer-reviewed scientific journals. Other key research and clinical facts are noted in a special four-page section of the report.

In addition, the report summarizes key 2022 research and initiatives funded by Pelotonia – the annual cycling event that raises millions of dollars for cancer research at Ohio State – including: the Pelotonia Institute for Immuno-Oncology; the Pelotonia Scholars Program that enables Ohio State students at all levels to conduct cancer research with faculty mentors; the Idea Grants program that provides teams of faculty researchers with seed money to generate early data for innovative research projects; and several statewide initiatives focused on the prevention of colorectal, lung, endometrial (uterine) and breast cancer.

Also within is a profile of the innovative Biofabrication Lab within the OSUCCC – James Center for Cancer Engineering, a look at seven senior-level recruits, and a glimpse at multiple institutional and individual/team achievements, awards and honors that reflect the groundbreaking impact of Ohio State’s cancer program.

Featured Research

Several prominent studies led by OSUCCC – James researchers in 2022 are helping to change the landscape of cancer care. In addition, two internationally renowned cancer researchers who finished their careers at Ohio State were honored posthumously at a memorial scientific symposium that included lectures by medical scientists from the United States and Europe.

Featured Grants

OSUCCC – James researchers in 2022 received 23 grants from the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and several grants from other federal sources to conduct research aimed at preventing cancer or improving cancer care.

Pelotonia funded research

In 2022, funds from Pelotonia, the annual cycling event that raises millions of dollars for cancer research at Ohio State, funded seven areas of endeavor.

The Skardal Biofabrication Lab

A central feature of the OSUCCC – James Center for Cancer Engineering is the Skardal Biofabrication Lab. Led by Aleksander Skardal, PhD, this lab focuses on designing and implementing extracellular biomaterials for the biofabrication of tissue and tumor organoids, organs-on-a-chip systems and cancer-on-a-chip systems for use in drug screening, disease modeling and personalized medicine.
