Funding Opportunities for Research

Supplements to Promote Diversity in Cancer Research

The goal of this funding is to enhance the diversity and address the underrepresentation of minorities and persons from underserved backgrounds in the scientific research workforce.

Supplements to Promote Diversity in Cancer Research

This is a $100,000 award to supplement funding for an existing Intramural Research Program (IRP) award within the first 16 months of the award period. The research proposal must be consistent with the specific aims of the original application or enhance them with a logical, new specific aim. This may be for postdoctoral fellows or early stage investigators. Up to $50,000 can be used to support postdoctoral fellow salaries, but there is no salary support for junior faculty. Award duration is for one year.

For the purposes of this award, eligible applicants are:

  • Individuals from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the NSF to be underrepresented in health-related sciences on a national basis. The following racial and ethnic groups have been shown to be underrepresented in biomedical research: Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, American Indians or Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders. In addition, it is recognized that underrepresentation can vary from setting to setting; individuals from racial or ethnic groups that can be demonstrated convincingly to be underrepresented by the grantee institution should be encouraged to participate in this program.
  • Individuals with disabilities, who are defined as those with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, as described in the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990, as amended.
  • Individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds, defined as:
    1. Individuals who come from a family with an annual income below established low-income thresholds. These thresholds are based on family size and published by the U.S. Bureau of the Census, adjusted annually for changes in the Consumer Price Index and adjusted by the Secretary for use in all health professions programs. The Secretary periodically publishes these income levels at http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/index.shtml.
    2. Individuals who come from an educational environment, such as that found in certain rural or inner-city environments that has demonstrably and directly inhibited the individual from obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to develop and participate in a research career.

Application Process

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis without a specific deadline. This application process is separate from the regular fall and spring IRP application and review cycles. The IRP website will be used to submit applications for this funding category.

Applications will be reviewed four times a year: July 15, October 15, January 15 and April 15. The review panel will include OSUCCC – James associate directors, Dr. Peter Shields, Dr. Paul Goodfellow and additional members of the OSUCCC leadership. Funding decisions will be announced within two weeks of review.

An application not selected for funding in a given cycle can be resubmitted a second time, presuming the parent award is still within 16 months of funding.
